Success stories

At the Trust we believe that our people are our greatest asset. We demand a lot from our employees and in return we invest in their development along with other great benefits.

Employing apprentices at the Trust is a great example of demonstrating this as we have had 100 percent success with them all, whether it’s completing an apprenticeship to the highest standard, being promoted from apprentice to a permanent member of staff or gaining the right skills and experience as an apprentice to open the door for bigger opportunities.

Below is a great success story from our past apprentice electrician and his manager who have summarised their journeys at the Trust.

Alex McGowan, Electrician

Alex started with the Trust in 2011 as an apprentice electrician. After a huge amount of hard work, dedication and training, by 2014 he was offered a permanent contract as an electrician.

‘During my time working at the Trust I feel like I've grown in confidence and matured due to the responsibility and trust handed to me. I've thoroughly enjoyed working here and couldn't think of a better thing to have done and would recommend it to anyone.

During my apprenticeship I worked alongside many electricians and various other tradesmen, learning a lot through a hands-on approach and a day release system at college. I have worked on various things from minor repairs and maintenance to install work in domestic and commercial environments which I've enjoyed the variation.

The transition from apprentice to permanent member of staff has been good as I have constant support around me form colleagues and managers which I can always ask for help from.

Since qualifying, I am now doing a gas and heating course to become qualified in that too. My biggest achievement to date would be passing my final exams and becoming a qualified electrician after a three year apprenticeship.

Overall experience of the trust is that it is a great place to work and learn about not just my trade, as every day is different and you get to experience all sides of a housing association. I couldn't have asked for a better workplace to do my apprenticeship and work through.’

Paul Day, Operations Business Manager

‘Alex joined the Trust as one of an intake of 3 that saw the first trade apprentices employed by the Trust.  During the interview and selection process Alex came across and a calm and mature young man with an evident passion for his chosen career path.  Alex quickly built up a strong working relationship with his trade mentor and was soon demonstrating an aptitude for electrics and proceeded to learn at an impressive rate.  His college assessor was extremely complimentary about Alex and his work and commented upon completion of his studies that ‘Alex has been a very committed and capable student throughout his course’.

Whilst in my team I never experienced any issues with Alex and always found him to be a personable young man, polite and willing to work hard in order to advance himself.  He has received praise for his attitude from his mentors as well as recognition for the quality of his work from the Quality Assurance team.  I am delighted that the Trust was able to offer Alex full time employment upon completion of his studies as he is a model employee and a credit to himself.’
