Light bulbs

Replacing light bulbs in your home when they no longer work is your responsibility. Whether it is a normal bulb, one encased in vapour or a fluorescent strip (usually found in the kitchen and bathroom) it is down to tenants to carry out these minor jobs, as set out in your tenancy agreements.

Here's a quick run through as to how to change a light bulb in your property: changing light bulb

1. Safety first!

Get a sturdy ladder or chair to stand on and your trusty screwdriver - Phillips or flathead.

2. Vapour bulb

Removal - switch off the consumer unit (also known as a fuse box). Remove the screws from the light unit and pull down the bulb, which should look like a kettle element with two or four pins. It will display the wattage (e.g. 16w), which you need to know when purchasing a replacement bulb.

Replacement - ensure the consumer is still switched off. Make sure the bulb is the right way up before pushing into place. Replace the casing and screws. Turn on the consumer unit to check that the bulb is working.

3. Fluorescent strip lights

Firstly, Check the ‘starter’ (small round starter towards the end of the fitting) as sometimes this can be the cause of the unit not working. Simply twist and pull out before installing a new starter by placing the prongs (two pins) into the holes and twist clockwise. Switch on the light and if it still doesn’t work then the bulb needs to be replaced.

Removal – switch off the light. Remove the casing by lifting away the end fitting that holds the case. Release the bulb by twisting it to a 90-degree angle.

Replacement - insert the new bulb by placing the prongs (two pins) into the holes and turning 90-degrees to lock it in. Replace the casing and switch on the light. If the light still doesn’t work, please report this to us as a repair.
