Supporting People in Independent Living

The Trust believes that all residents should feel comfortable and be able to live independently in their homes, for as long as they can. Providing Supported Housing is one of the ways that we can ensure that older and vulnerable people can lead an independent life, in a secure and friendly environment.

Anyone over the age of 60 may apply for Supported Housing, even if their spouse is younger, although they must be able to lead an independent life with low level support. Each SH scheme has a Supported Housing Officer, whose role is to help residents’ retain their independence, assist in organising social activities and to encourage them to maintain their home and a healthy, comfortable lifestyle.

Supported Housing Officers are not available 24 hours a day and cannot provide nursing or home-care services. If necessary they can contact Social Services or other professionals to arrange for additional help for residents, help with meals or personal care, or support with welfare benefits. The Supported Housing Officer cannot handle residents’ finances or administer medication.

Each scheme also has a 24 hour alarm service to ensure that every resident is able to summon help if need be, at any time day or night.

The Trust has 16 schemes in various places around the Vale:
