Matthew Applegate, Chief executive of the Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust, said: ‘Today, during routine work on a vacant Trust property, what was believed to be a potentially dangerous World War II relic was found in a garden shed at Orchard Place. The police were immediately called to the scene and an expert from the Counter Terrorism Unit later confirmed that the relic was a disused World War II aircraft bomb.

‘An X-ray confirmed that it was safe to take the relic off site for more detailed inspection and disposal.

‘We would like to thank the quick thinking and professionalism of both police and Trust staff – whose swift actions averted a potentially dangerous situation for local residents.

‘Although on this occasion it would seem the relic was harmless, and therefore no harm came to anyone involved, we owe a great debt of gratitude to the members of the Bomb Disposal and Counter Terrorism teams who were prepared to put themselves at risk to keep others safe.’
