Living Independently at Home

The Trust believes that all residents should feel comfortable and be able to live independently in their homes, for as long as they can.

Aids and Adaptations

There are many changes we can make if you become less able to comfortably use your home due to age, accident, illness or disability.

We use the accepted legal definition of disability, which is:

"A person has a disability if they have a physical or mental impairment, which has a substantial and long term effect on their ability to carry out normal everyday activities".

If you are not sure if you qualify, please contact the Trust and we will be able to advise you.

You can be sure that you will be treated fairly and according to your needs. The Trust takes equality and diversity very seriously, and we have a Disability Equality Scheme to ensure that all residents have the same access to help and support.

Wherever possible, we will incorprate adaptation works up to the value of £2000 into the Decent Homes investment programme. This helps us to provide a value for money service.

What adaptations can you make?

There are all manner of adapations that we can make to a property that will assist you in everyday living. Every resident is assessed according to their needs. Aids and adaptations can include:

  •    Staircase modificationsAids and Adaptations
  •    External lighting
  •    Flashing door bells
  •    Smoke alarm alerts
  •    Different types of grabrails and handrails
  •    Ramped and improved entrance access
  •    Intercom
  •    Door and wall protectors
  •    Tap and WC levers
  •    Change the height of electric faceplates
  •    Safety Glass
  •    Dropped kerbs

You can also subscribe to the Lifeline community alarm.

What about works that cost over £2000?

We will carry out what we call an "individual scheme appraisal" on this type of work, providing it meets the following criteria:

  • The resident receives the Local Authority Disabled Facilities grant
  • Works are recommended and approved by the Occupational Therapist
  • The property must be evaluated as suitable for the adaptations
Rooms in need of decoration

We will make good any decorations after work has been carried out.

In addition, residents over the age of 60, or those who are disabled, may have one room per year decorated by us, free of charge. For more details, please contact the Trust and ask about "One Room per Year".
