Energy efficient homes mean £177,000 of savings

More energy efficient Trust homes mean over £177,000 savings for residentss plus major savings for the environment.

The Trust’s five year, £105 million Investment Programme is really paying dividends for our residents and the environment.

Amongst other home improvements, the programme includes fitting double glazed doors and windows, extra wall and roof insulation and super efficient central heating systems.

The combination of all these elements have seen a year on year improvement in our SAP* rating since the Trust was formed three years ago.

£’s Savings

In 2008 an average Trust property SAP rating was 62.

In 2009 this had risen to 65. This rating that is an impressive 13 points ahead of the national average of 52. The three point increase in our SAP rating means that, on average, your annual energy bill will have reduced by over £28.00 per home or £177,746** for all our residents.

Carbon Savings

The total carbon saving, due to the reduced energy consumption, is around 280kgCO2 ** per household or a total of 1,799 tonnes of CO2.

This is equivalent to saving the running of a large school of 1,200 students like Mandeville, for over a year.

Graham Hollingdale, Interim Director of Property and Development at the Trust said “ The Trust is delighted that the SAP rating research confirms the substantial savings our residents can make. With energy costs increasing all the time, we feel one excellent way to guarantee value for money for our residents, is to provide quality homes that are as energy efficient as possible.

"As we continue the Decent Homes Programme even more of our residents will be able to live in warm, comfortable homes and save money too. We have a firm commitment to save energy across all departments of our business. And we are working towards a sustainability and energy efficiency strategy that takes in every aspect of the way we operate and manage our properties”.

*A SAP rating is a government backed method of measuring the relative energy efficiency of a property.

** Financial and carbon dioxide values were calculated from EON and SAP ratings research carried out on behalf of VAHT.
