Disability Equality Scheme
To demonstrate The Trust’s commitment to disabled residents and staff, we are developing a Disability Equality Scheme, (DES). This is a long term strategy that shows how the Trust will promote disability equality and makes sure the needs of disabled residents and staff are met.
This initiative goes beyond what the law requires us to do but is line with the Trust’s strategic plan for inclusion within the communities of the Vale. It also meets the Housing Corporation expectations for Housing Associations like the Trust to develop appropriate Disability action plans.
The purpose of the scheme is to:
- promote equality of opportunity between disabled persons and other persons
- eliminate discrimination that is unlawful under the Act
- eliminate harassment of disabled persons that is in relation to their impairment;
- to promote positive attitudes towards disabled persons;
- to encourage participation by disabled people in public life;
- take steps to take account of disabled persons’ disabilities, even where that involves treating disabled persons more favourably than other persons.
The Trust has now set up a steering group of disabled residents and staff to help deliver the scheme.
